Fire Uniform Wash

All fire uniform is washed according to specific regulations of the National Fire Protection Agency. The processes used by Fire Uniform Wash will not void warranties, nor compromise the integrity of the fire uniform. Fire uniform should not be washed more often than once in a six month period, but if repairs or contaminants have to be removed the fire uniform has to be washed first.

Fire Uniform Wash uses a specialized wet washing system that has been developed over the years we have been in business. This system makes use of the Check6 aerospace cleaning agent, industrial-size washer/extractors that are state of the art machinery, ensures fire uniform is cleaned to perfection. The use of an electrically operated valve system, a fresh-water-flushing chemical manifold, and a six liquid chemical injection point ensures the best, possible fire uniform wash.

We are able to remove virtually any kind of contaminant from all fire uniform garments, but if we can’t clean it, you don’t pay. Before discarding any fire uniform in the case of contamination, contact us, you might believe it is completely ruined, however, we might be in a position to save the garment for you. Both washing and repair of fire uniform is far more economical than expensive replacement.

Fire Uniform Inspection

The most important aspect to maintaining the integrity of fire uniform is probably the inspection. There are varying levels of inspection and these are required by the NFPA to be carried out at certain intervals. The three levels of inspection, that staff at Fire Uniform Wash is fully trained and certified to conduct are:

  1.  Routine Inspection
  2. Advanced Inspection
  3. Complete Liner Inspection

Routine Inspection

The firefighter himself generally carries out the routine inspection; he should do this as regularly as possible. We at Fire Uniform Wash are trained to look for:

  • contamination,
  • soiling,
  • physical damage to the materials of the fire uniform
  • loss of integrity in stitching, trim and seams.

Advanced Inspection

Advanced inspection of fire Uniform is regulated by NFPA 1851. Advanced inspection must take place once every six months by a certified third party such as Fire Uniform Wash. The advanced inspection may also be carried out by trained personnel in the fire department. There are various procedures that must be adhered to, noted and tracked during advanced inspection.

  • Soiled fire uniform must be washed before inspection.
  • Inspection findings must be documented by tracking.
  • Routine inspection procedures must also be followed.
  • Tests on fire uniform must be conducted
  • Light evaluation of liners
  • Evaluation of fire uniform for leakage
  • Assessment of physical and thermal damage
  • Check for missing hardware
  • Moisture barrier integrity test
  • Seam integrity test
  • Material integrity test
  • Label integrity test
  • Reflectivity test
  • Closure system test

Complete Liner Inspection

Fire uniform must undergo a complete liner inspection once a year when the fire uniform is three years old or older. Fire Uniform Wash is certified for this inspection. In order to carry out the complete liner inspection, the liner of the fire uniform needs to be separated from the main garment, and the moisture barrier and thermal liner exposed. Both these elements require specialized investigation. The moisture and water penetration barrier both need to be tested and evaluated to see if the fire uniform is still viable for use. If the fire uniform needs to be replaced Fire Uniform Wash informs the customer.

Fire Uniform Tracking

SATS, or the Secure Asset Tracking System is used by Fire Uniform Wash. This allows the customer to follow the progress of the fire uniform through the wash, repair and inspection process. As each item of fire uniform progresses through the system it is tracked and recorded and customers are kept informed. The following records are kept:

  • Name of bunker gear owner
  • Date of issue
  • Manufacturer
  • Manufacturer's serial number
  • Month and year of manufacture

SATS is integrated with NFPA regulations and standards, and alerts customers to which department the garment is currently at and whether it requires washing, repair or replacement..
